Specifier-Led Selection

Office lighting requirements: light levels, glare and controls.

Office lighting must provide enough light for the task while keeping computer screens and surrounding spaces comfortable. Consider natural light, artificial light, desk positions and operating hours together. Brightness, glare control, colour temperature and energy efficiency affect working conditions; brighter light alone is not a promise of better concentration or productivity.

Choosing the right lighting for the workspace.

General lighting illuminates the room; task lighting concentrates light where reading, writing or detailed work happens. Ambient lighting affects the surrounding space, while accent lighting can highlight reception features. A balanced lighting setup uses the appropriate LED light fixtures for each purpose, with output and light distribution checked against the workstation layout.

Workplace use, lux and lumen output

Lumens describe the light output of a luminaire; lux describes illumination falling on the work surface. Desk layout, mounting height and the task-plane target determine how much light is needed. A neutral 4000K is commonly considered for desks; warm white may suit reception or breakout areas. A UGR19 product description does not establish the room's glare result: check the optic, output, positions and viewing directions using the relevant photometry.

Ceiling
Mounting and service access

Confirm the grid module or cut-out, body depth, driver space and maintenance access. A nominal 600 × 600 panel is not a 600 × 600 body: Luminate measures 589 × 593 × 100 mm. Surface frames, plasterboard kits and suspension accessories require the correct product-specific arrangement.

Controls
DALI, Casambi and sensors

The driver and control comparison separates DALI, Casambi, local dimming and fixed output. Specify sensors, daylight response and emergency testing separately; confirm compatible gear, available wiring and zones before ordering.

Evidence
LED energy efficiency and circularity

Compare the installed electrical load, operating hours and control settings when estimating energy savings. An LED replacement can use less energy than an older fluorescent lighting arrangement, but cost savings depend on the actual fittings and hours of use. Review driver life, access and circularity information alongside the initial cost: a long lifespan is useful only when the complete luminaire remains maintainable.

Commercial Applications

Choose office lighting around the ceiling and room.

Panels, recessed linear luminaires, suspended fittings and downlights serve different ceiling conditions. Compare the mounting, optic and output for each desk, meeting, reception or circulation area; confirm illumination and glare against the actual layout.

Ceiling grid

For open-plan desks under a compatible modular ceiling, compare the slim edge-lit Edge-Lite panel with Luminate's direct / indirect panel. Check actual body dimensions, the driver position and the ceiling system before selecting the mounting kit.

Recessed linear

Path recessed linear lighting offers a low-glare diffuser option for desk and meeting areas with a suitable ceiling opening. Check cut-out, void depth, length and access; a recessed fitting cannot be selected from ceiling height alone.

Exposed ceiling

Luma suspended dark-light linear lighting is an option for exposed soffits and meeting rooms. Confirm the suspension positions, finished mounting height, optic, output and ceiling fixing arrangement alongside the room's glare and scene requirements.

Reception & support

Compare Halo thin-bezel downlights for reception, circulation and support rooms. Check cut-out, recessed depth, IP requirement and distribution. For an existing office, the office LED upgrade guide covers replacement and retained-ceiling considerations.

Specification Questions

Practical office lighting questions.

LED panels or linear lights for an office?

LED panels suit compatible ceiling grids; recessed linear lights need a suitable ceiling opening and void depth. Surface-mounted and suspended linear luminaires provide alternatives for solid ceilings and exposed soffits. Compare the exact mounting arrangement, optic, output and driver, then check glare and illuminance in the room rather than choosing by wattage alone.

How much light does an office need?

The lighting requirement depends on the task, room layout and relevant lighting standards. Lux measures the light reaching a desk; lumen output describes what the light source emits. Increasing brightness alone does not ensure adequate lighting: uniform light, shadows, surrounding surfaces and viewing directions also matter. Check the task-plane lighting levels using a room calculation, and include daylight where it is available.

How does commercial office lighting differ from a domestic lamp?

A desk lamp or floor lamp supplies local, focused lighting for reading or study. Commercial ceiling lights provide general lighting across a working environment and must be considered with mounting, control gear and emergency provision. Replacing an LED bulb in a domestic fitting is different from specifying an integrated LED luminaire. For a dedicated workspace at home, compare fitted options in our home office lighting range.

How can glare and eye strain be reduced?

Bright lights, exposed LEDs and reflections can distract from computer work. Position overhead lights with the desk and screen layout, and compare the optic and light distribution rather than wattage alone. Direct light towards the work area without leaving the user in shadow. A low-glare fitting can help reduce discomfort, but does not guarantee a particular room UGR result or prevent eye strain. Natural lighting, blinds, surface finishes and the brightness of adjacent areas should also be considered.

Which colour temperature suits an office environment?

4000K neutral white light is commonly considered for office work; warm white can suit reception, lounge and breakout spaces. Colour temperature describes the appearance of the light, not its brightness. Compare colour rendering index (CRI) where accurate colour appearance matters. The available CCT, output and tunable-white options depend on the product and its driver, so check the exact configuration.

Can LED office lights be dimmable or use sensors?

Yes, with the appropriate driver and control gear. A DALI lighting system, Casambi arrangement and local dimmer have different wiring and compatibility requirements. Occupancy or motion sensors and daylight response can adjust lighting around room use, reducing unnecessary energy consumption. Specify control zones and commissioning separately; a dimmable fitting does not automatically support every dimming method.

Can LEDs replace fluorescent tubes and older light fittings?

An LED tube replacement retains an existing fitting and needs a compatibility assessment; a new LED panel or linear luminaire replaces the complete fixture. Check the existing ballast, wiring, ceiling opening, emergency equipment and installation method with the electrician. When comparing fluorescent bulbs, halogen or incandescent bulbs with LED technology, use the actual system power and required light output, rather than a blanket percentage saving.

How is emergency lighting supplied with office luminaires?

Selected luminaires can include emergency conversion, with separate emergency lights and exit signs where needed. Specify the available battery and driver space, emergency output, indicator position and testing method. Escape-route coverage and operation during a supply failure need their own assessment; the normal office lighting layout does not establish emergency compliance.
