Controls Before Product Selection

Luminaire options for commercial lighting control systems.

Select the luminaires first, then confirm the matching control gear for each zone. Include quantities, existing wiring and any required sensors, switches or emergency testing arrangement in the quotation request.

Non-dim

Fixed-output switching

For straightforward switched circuits where the project needs efficient commercial lighting without dimming control gear or a networked lighting control system.

DALI

DALI, DSI and SwitchDIM control

DALI supports addressable lighting, groups and two-way communication. DSI provides one-way digital dimming, while SwitchDIM uses push-button control with compatible drivers. These methods have different wiring and commissioning requirements.

Phase

Phase dimmable and mains dimming

For compatible ranges where leading or trailing-edge dimming is the practical option for a room, retrofit or smaller scheme.

Casambi

Casambi Bluetooth wireless control

For wireless grouping, scenes and compatible sensor or switch control. Compare the verified panel and batten options on the Casambi-ready luminaires page; the matching driver or module is an explicit product option.

Sensors

Occupancy and daylight-ready products

Occupancy sensors respond to presence; daylight control adjusts lighting in response to available natural light. Suitable sensors and drivers allow the control system to reduce unnecessary lighting, with zones, settings and compatibility defined for the space.

Emergency

DALI emergency control and testing

DALI emergency uses dedicated emergency control gear, addressing and reporting arrangements. It remains separate from normal DALI dimming and is covered in the DALI emergency lighting guide.

How this affects product selection

The same product range can suit different control setups across a project, so switching, dimming and emergency choices are confirmed before references are fixed.

Linear

Flow UK-made recessed LG7 linear luminaire

Flow is a UK-made recessed LG7 linear luminaire for low-glare recessed lighting for offices, schools, and retail. Available in three lengths with tunable outputs, it supports LG7 compliance, DALI dimming (/+ECO), and emergency conversion (/EMI).

Linear

HighRack industrial LED high bay light

Lumenloop HighRack is an industrial LED high bay light for warehouse aisles, high-rack storage and large halls. Philips LED and driver technology, 34° or 92° optics, EasyAir sensor options and surface, suspended or BESA mounting support demanding industrial projects.

Panels

Luminate direct indirect LED panel

Luminate is a direct indirect LED panel with a microprism diffuser, LG7-focused low-glare versions, Touch+DALI, Casambi and emergency options, with tunable white available as a custom configuration.

Downlights

Frame adjustable framelight downlight

Frame is an adjustable framelight downlight for architectural and commercial lighting applications where precise light control, low glare, and high performance are essential. Equipped with a Tridonic LED module and driver system, the Frame ensures long-lasting efficiency and reliability.

Lighting Controls Specification

Control gear is specified with each commercial luminaire.

A lighting management system may combine dimming, occupancy sensing, daylight response and manual override. The luminaire schedule needs the compatible driver and control option for each zone, with emergency control gear identified separately.

Specification and fitting reference review

Control requirements should be reviewed as part of the product schedule so the final luminaire references match the project requirement.

Control Strategy

Control systems by application.

A warehouse sensor strategy is not the same as a hotel dimming scene or an office daylight-control requirement. Each application needs luminaires with the appropriate driver and control options.

Office

Separate office daylight, occupancy and meeting-room control groups. Review the office zoning example.

Warehouse

Sensor-led and high-output options where mounting height, occupancy and long operating hours shape the control strategy.

Hospitality

Dimming and scene-control options where atmosphere, guest comfort and emergency provision need coordination.

Retrofit

Control gear and driver options where existing wiring, fittings and maintenance constraints are central.

Lighting controls / Office fit-out & refurbishment

Office lighting controls:
daylight and occupancy zones.

Window-side desks, interior workstations and meeting rooms do not always need the same lighting response. Separate control groups allow the lighting to respond to how each area is used.

WINDOWS / DAYLIGHTMEETING ROOM A · Window-side desksB · Interior desksC · Meeting roomCirculation Illustrative control zones.Emergency lighting is specified separately.

All three areas are occupied. Each remains a separate control group.

A

Window-side desks

With suitable daylight sensing and dimming control, this group can reduce its electric light contribution as daylight increases.

B

Interior workstations

Keep the deeper office area in its own control group. A change at the windows should not automatically dim every workstation.

C

Meeting rooms

A separate occupancy zone allows an unused room to switch off after its configured delay, while occupied desk areas remain lit.

Specify the complete arrangement

Match the driver, controls and office layout.

DALI and Casambi options depend on the selected luminaire and control gear. Sensors, user controls, group assignments and commissioning requirements need to be coordinated with the project.

For an office refurbishment, include any existing controls or wiring that must be retained. Emergency lighting and its testing arrangements should be identified separately.

Control Gear Evidence

DALI, DSI and SwitchDIM

Control gear can be considered with the luminaire range, lighting system and final model code.

Casambi options

Wireless control options can be considered where the project requirement supports them, particularly where new light control wiring is limited.

Sensor strategy

Occupancy, daylight and natural light assumptions can influence product selection, spacing, energy savings and switching behaviour.

Emergency review

Emergency conversion and control requirements should be coordinated before quote stage.

Controls FAQ

Lighting controls questions.

Do Lumenloop luminaires support non-dim and dimmable controls?

Yes. Lumenloop can provide non-dim fixed-output, DALI, SwitchDIM, phase dimmable, mains dimming, Casambi Bluetooth and sensor-ready options for selected luminaire ranges, with each light control method matched to compatible control gear.

When should a project use DALI lighting controls?

DALI is usually considered when a commercial scheme needs addressable control, grouped areas, commissioning, monitoring context or a clearer specification approach for offices, education, hospitality and larger refurbishments. Its two-way communication is useful where feedback from the control line matters.

What is DSI lighting control used for?

DSI suits simpler digital dimming projects where one-way control is enough and the luminaire range supports it. It is often considered alongside DALI and SwitchDIM when the project needs a straightforward control choice.

Can Casambi Bluetooth controls work for retrofit projects?

Casambi can be useful where wireless grouping, scene setting or retrofit flexibility helps the project. The luminaire range, driver option and control requirement still need to be checked as part of the control-ready product selection.

Is phase dimming the same as DALI?

No. Phase dimming uses compatible mains dimming hardware, while DALI is a digital control protocol. Wiring, room type, driver compatibility and the required level of control determine the correct method.

What should be included in a lighting controls enquiry?

Include the preferred control method, room types, zones, operating hours, sensor requirements, energy consumption priorities, emergency requirements and any product ranges already under review. Wider project enquiries can go through project enquiry.

Can office lighting controls be changed during a refurbishment?

The options depend on the retained luminaires, drivers, wiring and control system. Identify what must stay and where the room layout or operating pattern will change before selecting the replacement fittings and controls.

Does a DALI driver include occupancy or daylight control?

A DALI driver receives control commands; it does not by itself supply an occupancy sensor, daylight sensor or complete control system. Define the required sensors, controller, power supply, wiring and commissioning separately. Casambi and other control arrangements require their own compatible hardware and should not be treated as interchangeable driver upgrades.
