DALI specification
Control gear, wiring and commissioning remain explicit.
DALI, the digital addressable lighting interface, is a digital lighting-control protocol. The selected LED downlight and fixture need compatible DALI control gear and driver, coordinated with the project wiring and commissioning arrangement. DALI drivers provide the interface between the lighting-control system and the LED fixture, so choose a DALI-compatible downlight and driver together. On a commercial lighting scheme, DALI is the light-control layer rather than a substitute for optical design; when it is specified and commissioned correctly, it can support smooth dimming and consistent light quality. Confirm the driver, wiring, addressing and commissioning arrangement together, because the same product family can have different control suffixes. For refurbishment work, check existing ceiling openings and control wiring before selecting a replacement. This keeps DALI dimming, lumen output, beam angle and emergency lighting as separate specification decisions.

What is a DALI dimmable downlight?
A DALI dimmable downlight uses compatible DALI control gear so it can receive digital lighting-control commands. DALI is compatible with an LED fixture when the driver supports the protocol; the driver, wiring, addressing and commissioning method must match the project control system.
Is DALI dimming the same as DALI emergency?
No. Normal DALI dimming controls the light output during normal operation. DALI emergency uses dedicated emergency control gear for testing, status queries and emergency operation.
Can DALI downlights also include emergency conversion?
Selected product ranges publish both normal DALI control and emergency variations. They remain separate option decisions and must be confirmed against the product information.
Can DALI downlights be controlled individually or in groups?
They can be addressed individually or grouped during the DALI system design and commissioning process, provided the selected downlight and driver are compatible with the project control arrangement.
