DALI lighting system components

A DALI lighting system connects sensors, switches, application controllers and LED drivers on a two-wire digital control bus. Compatible luminaires can then be addressed, grouped, dimmed and monitored through the controls system.

Two-wire DALI control bus

The bus carries digital commands between control devices and control gear on the subnet.

64 control gear and 64 control devices per subnet

A DALI-2 subnet supports up to 64 control gear and 64 control devices. Larger systems use multiple subnets.

BMS and building-control integration

A compatible gateway can exchange defined lighting data and commands with a building management system.

System structure and subnet limits follow DALI Alliance guidance. Read the official DALI systems overview.

DALI and DALI-2 certification

DALI-2 is the current certification programme based on IEC 62386. It adds control devices to the certification scope and uses independently verified test specifications to improve multi-vendor interoperability.

Product cards identify luminaires available with a DALI control option. DALI-2 certification applies to the specific driver or control device, and certified product details are recorded in the DALI Alliance database.

  • Control devices were not covered by the version-1 certification system
  • Product identity should still be checked in the official database

DALI controls, sensors and commissioning

Commercial DALI installations combine luminaire selection with control zones, sensors, lighting scenes, emergency monitoring, BMS integration and commissioning.

DALI control zones

Individually addressed luminaires can be assigned to groups for local control, scheduled operation and scene changes.

Occupancy and daylight sensors

Occupancy time-outs, daylight response and manual overrides are configured for the way each space is used.

DALI lighting scenes

Programmed scenes can support presentation, cleaning and after-hours lighting where different operating states are required.

DALI emergency lighting

Compatible emergency control gear can support automated testing, status reporting and connection to a monitoring system.

BMS integration

A compatible gateway connects defined DALI lighting data and commands to the building management system.

DALI commissioning

Device addressing, group assignment, scene programming and functional testing form part of the commissioning record.

DALI emergency lighting

DALI emergency lighting testing and monitoring

DALI emergency control gear is covered by IEC 62386 Part 202 and identified as device type 1, or DT1. It can support automated function and duration testing, status reporting and integration with a wider monitoring system.

A complete DALI emergency lighting specification covers emergency duration, test schedules, status reporting, monitoring interfaces and record management. Emergency gear and controls are selected for the required system architecture.

DALI lighting specification

DALI luminaire and controls specification

A complete schedule identifies the luminaire, optical performance, DALI control gear, control devices, emergency equipment and commissioning requirements for each area.

Space and operating requirements

Operating hours, occupancy, daylight, local controls and lighting scenes establish the controls requirement for each area.

Luminaire and optical performance

Lumen output, light distribution, colour temperature and glare control determine the required luminaire configuration.

DALI driver and emergency gear

The product code identifies the driver, dimming range, DALI version and any self-test or DALI emergency control gear.

Controllers, sensors and gateways

Subnets, application controllers, sensors, switches, bus power supplies and BMS gateways form the controls architecture.

DALI commissioning and handover

Device addressing, operating-state tests and emergency test records provide the final commissioning information.

Specification questions

DALI lighting FAQs

What is DALI lighting?

DALI is a digital protocol for lighting control. It allows compatible control devices and control gear to exchange commands and status information over a two-wire bus.

What is the difference between DALI and DALI-2?

DALI-2 is the current certification programme. It covers control devices as well as control gear, and certified products are independently verified against DALI Alliance test specifications.

Can DALI control emergency lighting?

Yes. Self-contained emergency control gear is covered by IEC 62386 Part 202, known as device type 1. The completed system specification covers testing, monitoring and reporting.

Are all DALI luminaires compatible with DALI-2 controls?

DALI-2 compatibility is determined by the specific driver, its certification and any required device-type support. Certified product details are available in the DALI Alliance product database.

Can DALI lighting connect to a BMS?

Yes, through a suitable interface or gateway. The required data points, control permissions and integration responsibility should be agreed before commissioning.
